TIME magazine has unveiled its fourth annual TIME100 AI list, spotlighting the individuals shaping the future of artificial intelligence in what editors describe as one of the most “explosive and divisive” years for the sector.
The 2026 roster spans corporate titans, pioneering researchers, policymakers, labour advocates, and creative voices. The cover features a striking lineup including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mira Murati, Larry Ellison, Fei-Fei Li, Ilya Sutskever, Eddie Wu, Arvind Krishna, Paris Hilton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Sacks, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Marian Croak, and Liz Shuler.
TIME divided the honourees into four categories — Leaders, Innovators, Shapers, and Thinkers. Among the Leaders are OpenAI’s Sam Altman, chief research officer Mark Chen, and president Greg Brockman; Anthropic co-founders Dario and Daniela Amodei; and Elon Musk, who this year took a major AI company public. Chinese executives also feature prominently, with ByteDance’s Liang Rubo, Alibaba’s Eddie Wu, and Moonshot AI’s Yang Zhilin among those recognized.
Editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs framed the selections as a reflection of AI’s widening impact, noting that the list now extends beyond corporate boardrooms to include labour leaders, policy voices, and figures from the creative industries. Published alongside the list are in-depth interviews with Mira Murati of Thinking Machines Lab, ITU secretary-general Doreen Bogdan-Martin, and OpenEvidence founder Daniel Nadler.
The announcement sparked immediate debate. Critics pointed to the absence of Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis — figures many argue are central to AI’s infrastructure and model development. Others welcomed the broader scope, seeing it as recognition that AI’s influence is no longer confined to Silicon Valley but is reshaping labour, governance, and culture worldwide.
