The acclaimed Bangladesh–India joint production “Mayar Jonjal” (Debris of Desire), starring Aupee Karim and Ritwick Chakraborty, is set to premiere on the OTT platform Chorki at midnight on 23 September (24 September). The film, which marked Aupee Karim’s return to cinema after 19 years, has already earned international recognition and critical praise.

Directed by Indranil Roychowdhury, known for Foring and City of Love, and produced by Josim Ahmed, the film is based on two short stories by celebrated writer Manik Bandopadhyay — Bishakto Prem and Subala.

Aupee Karim plays Soma, opposite Ritwick Chakraborty as Chandan, with notable performances by Shohel Mondol, Paran Bandopadhyay, Bratya Basu, and Chandrayee Ghosh. The narrative intertwines two parallel stories, portraying how marginalized individuals struggle to survive amid harsh urban realities.

The film explores themes of poverty, unemployment, fragile relationships, and moral compromise, while revealing the emotional and social complexities hidden beneath everyday life.

“Mayar Jonjal” premiered globally at the Shanghai International Film Festival (2020), earning a nomination in the Asian New Talent Award category. It was later screened at the Moscow International Film Festival, winning accolades at the Asiatica Film Festival (Italy) and Arthouse Asia Film Festival (Kolkata). In 2022, it won Best Screenplay at the Dhaka International Film Festival, followed by seven awards at the Filmfare Awards Bangla (2024).

The film was released theatrically across Bangladesh and West Bengal on 24 February 2023, where it drew widespread acclaim for its performances and direction. Now, audiences worldwide will be able to stream the film on Chorki from 23 September midnight.
